The Social Security Administration (SSA) has recently proposed changes to the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program that would affect the benefits received by millions of disabled individuals in the United States. Currently, those receiving SSI are susceptible to having their monthly payments docked–as much as by one-third–if they have their food provided by an outside source, such as family members or neighbors.  

Since 2014, the ABLE (Achieving a Better Life Experience) Act has allowed people with disabilities to save for future expenses without jeopardizing their eligibility for vital government benefits like Medicaid or Social Security. However, it only applied to those who became disabled before turning 26 years old. 

Social security is much more than just retirement benefits. In addition to providing monthly payouts and health care coverage to eligible recipients, social security also offers other services that are not widely known and often overlooked.
